1. maj

“We will hold on one more minute than you will!”

Communist Organization of Greece (KOE)International Relations Department * www.koel.gr * laokratia@yahoo.comInfo 3 * 13 March 2007*****“We will hold on one more minute than you will!”Update on the ongoing mobilizations for free and public education The mobilizations for free and public education in Greece continue. The last weeks were marked by a considerable increase of the state repression, in an attempt to break the movement. The demonstration of Thursday 8 March (that day the frame-law on higher education has been adopted by the right-wing majority in the Parliament) has been savagely attacked by the police forces. It was a big and militant demonstration, even bigger than that of 22 February, with more than 40.000 participants. The special anti-riot police attacked repeatedly in front of the Parliament building, using tons of chemicals and tear gas and injuring scores of demonstrators. Despite the attack, the demonstrators have regrouped several times during more than 4 hours. The police has arrested 61 demonstrators, almost all of them students, and transferred them to its headquarters. Among them, there were several members of KOE and of the Left Mass Formations of the Youth. In violation of all the relative legislation, they have been isolated, and those wounded among them were transferred to the hospital only next morning. Their lawyers, their professors, members of the Parliament and their families have been prevented from visiting them during 18 hours. The response of the movement was immediate: a big crowd gathered next morning, on Friday 9 March, at the Court building. As the police still kept them in its headquarters instead of presenting them to the Court, hundreds of people marched towards the police headquarters, scanting slogans against the state repression, for the liberation of the arrested comrades and for the continuation of the struggle. A few hours later, on Friday evening, a big demonstration composed by 10.000 people took place in the center of Athens, condemning the government policies and the police aggression. Many protest activities took place through out Greece during the weekend. At the same time, in Athens 1.000 students, representatives of various left groups and non-affiliated students, responded to the call of KOE to form a united left student front in order to counter effectively the neoliberal current. The outcome was the successful constitution of the "Left Unity", which aims to be an effective weapon in the hands of the struggling students.  On Monday 12 March hundreds of supporters gathered anew in the Court building, during the presentation of the arrested students accused for "felonies" (constitution of gang, weapons' holding, attempt to harm police personnel, etc.). For the first time in recent years, the police aggressed the parents and the supporters of the arrested students inside the Court building. However, the Court decided the conditional release of all arrested until their trial will take place later this month, with one exception. The evening of the same day a big solidarity concert took place in the center of Athens, at Constitution Square.  Thursday 15 March was the next date of central mobilizations all over Greece. 15.000 marched in Athens, 5.000 in Thessalonica, 3.000 in Patras and several thousands in other Greek cities. The occupations of universities continue (actually 240 faculties are occupied), while the Panhellenic Federation of University Professors' Associations decided to continue the strike as well. Actually we are organizing local marches in the neighborhoods of Athens and in many other Greek cities in order to call the people in the new central demonstration that will take place this Thursday 22 March. Several thousands of the posters and flyers of KOE calling to continue the struggle are spread all over the country. The state terror will not stop us! We will continue until victory!*****
